John Rowell was only 16 when he enlisted in the Rev. War and served for three years. He mustered in Lincoln Co. in Col. McCobb’s 1st. Regiment and marched to Providence, R.I. to reinforce Col. Waldo’s and Col. Jacob’s regiments. John was one of the guards assigned to prisoner Major Andre, the spy who was hanged by order of George Washington. When John’s daughter, Hannah, was a little girl, he would sit her on his knees, and John would tearfully tell her the story of Major Andre’s execution, whom John had gotten attached to while Andre was a prisoner of war awaiting trial and execution.

John Abbott was on the first tax list in Woolwich from 1776 to 1782 before removing to Boothbay along with his brother after about 1785.

He married Rachel McPhetres of Bath, (name also seen as McFredericks). Rachel was b. ca.1782, probably Arrowsic, the daughter of William and Hannah McPhetres of Arrowsic; and she d. probably in Bath after 1860. John and Rachel had seven children all born in Boothbay between 1805 and 1819:

Peleg Tolman Abbott b: 6 JAN 1805
Hannah Abbott b: 19 MAR 1807
Nathan Abbott b: 29 MAR 1809
John Abbott b: 19 MAY 1812
William Abbott b: 21 SEP 1814
Robert Abbott b: 16 DEC 1816
Laurinda Abbott b: 13 JUN 1819

John is likely buried in an unmarked grave on Barter's Island where he settled, perhaps in the Abbott Family Cemetery along with other family members.
