Joe L. Butcher, 77 of Jonesboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2015, at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana after a long and fulfilling life.

Joe was born on a Friday, February 18, 1938, in Fairmount, IN. He was the son of the late Gola "Goldie" Butcher and the late Alice Williams Butcher. He attended Fairmount High School, began working at the age of 15, and ultimately retired as a supervisor for Midwest Metal after 44 years. Joe was a man fond of working with his hands. He took great pride in his woodworking projects and the many homes constucted by Joe and his brothers. When the work was complete, he lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed the wind blowing through his hair while riding his motorcycle. Many Sundays were spent watching NASCAR and Indy car races with his wife, Sandy. He was a practical joker, lover of the lakes, camper and avid fisherman. He could often be found relaxing on a boat on Chapman Lake. If one was quiet enough, one could hear him calling for the fish with his signature fish call. Most of all, Joe enjoyed any activity that involved spending time with his wife, siblings, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His zest for life was incomparable, and he lived every day until the end with passion and fury. Joe’s passing will leave a hole in the hearts of those he left behind. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

This love for life was only matched by his love for his wife of close to 40 years, Sandy, who survives. Sandy is the daughter of the late Norman and Minnie Piper. Sandy was the light of his life and the center of his existence. She kept him in line and loved him as dearly as he loved her.

Joe learned his love of family as he was fortunate enough to be raised with 9 siblings. He cherished this fact and lived life with his siblings as his best friends, fishing partners, and travel companions. Sadly, he was preceeded in death by siblings and in-laws, Bernard (Betty) Butcher, Addie (Ed) Oswalt, Bertha (Virgil) Elsworth, Fred (Wilda) Butcher, Don Butcher, Jack Combs and Bill Johnson. He is survived and loved by Phil (Joan) Butcher, Katie Combs, Jim (Marietta) Butcher, Rosie Johnson, Joyce Butcher, Anita (Alan) Reasoner and William Brown. He is also survived by three children: Rick (Corina) Butcher, Connie (Mike) Warrum, and Todd (Mindy) Butcher and two step children: Deverl (Cathy) Shelton and Darla (Phil) Royal. If you gave him the opportunity, he would proudly tell you about any of his 12 grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe’s love of humor and life lives on in his grandchildren. They will forever tell stories of Grandpa’s jokes and repeat his entertaining songs.

The family will be celebrating Joe’s life at the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt funeral home, 415 S. Main St, Fairmount, IN They welcome friends to celebrate and share with them Thursday from 5-8 at the funeral home. A service to honor this great man will be Friday at 11:30, also at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home with Pastor Brock Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Fairmount, IN.
