José was born on December 16, 1933 in Guadalupita, NM to Abelino and Carlota (Archuleta) Lucero and was raised in Las Vegas.
José attended school in Las Vegas, NM and graduated from Taos High School in 1952 where his joy was being on the 1st string basketball and football teams.
José was in the United States Army where he honorably served his country in a tour of duty in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC as a Radio Operator. José traveled throughout the entire United States, driving with Bekins and Allied moving firms. José retired from Consolidated Freight as a Teamster and settled in the South Valley.
José was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church.
José married Mary Frances Sandoval, they had four children, Al Lucero Jr., Michael Ré, Antoinette Chávez and Teresa Ré.
José was preceded in death by wife, Mary Frances, parents, Abelino and Carlota Lucero, brothers, Albert Lucero and Abelino "Abie" Lucero Jr., sisters, Sophie Kemm, Mary García, Simonita Cassidy and Ester Pray.
José is survived by his children, Al, Michael, Antoinette and Teresa, grandchildren, René Chávez Miera, Michelle Chávez Mitchell, Gabrielo Ré and Nicole Ré, two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Beverly and Grace Miera, siblings, Carlos Lucero, Robert Lucero, Fred Lucero, Georgia Dziurzynski and Lita Lovato.
José would like to express his sincere appreciation to his granddaughter René Chávez Miera, who was there to help him when he needed her the most.
Services will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal Rd. SW, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. A Rosary will be recited at 8:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will take place at the Santa Fé National Cemetery, in Santa Fé, NM at 3:00 p.m.
