William was born the second oldest of 5 sons to William and Jane D. McClellan McDonald on 2 April 1831 in Kentucky. The McDonalds were Irish immigrants, first in Kentucky and then in Randolph County and a farming family. At 28, William was on his own farm when he enlisted for a 100-day tour of duty in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Co. K, 142nd IL INF. He mustered in on June 18, 1864 at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL and out in Chicago Oct 26, 1864. While no injuries or illness show on William's military records, he acquired Invalid status March 14, 1892, most likely due to debilitating disease.
Service: Organized at Freeport, Ill., and mustered in for 100 days June 18, 1864. Moved to Memphis, Tenn., June 21-24. Attached to R.R. District, Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tennessee, and assigned to duty on Memphis & Charleston R.R. at White's Station till October. Mustered out October 27, 1864.

William returned to farming after the war and married Jane Bollinger on May 2, 1867. They resided at the same farm near Blair, Randolph Co., IL their entire married life, having at least 6 children. William died Feb 22, 1909 at the age of 77. Jane filed for William's military pension Mar 10, 1909. The 1910 Census shows Jane, 69, and son Louis, 40, living with daughter Laura and husband Logan McNabney also in Blair Precinct. Jane died Jan 29, 1918 at the age of 77. Both William and Jane are buried in Union Cemetery, Randolph, Illinois. William's stone is the standard white marble military headstone.
Note: William's brothers David M, James and Granville also fought in the Civil War. James was killed near Atlanta in 1864 and David died within months of mustering out in 1865.
