First Lieutenant David M. McDonald served with Company C of the 30th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Civil War

David M. McDonald (1833-1865) Civil War: Company C/F, S, 30th Illinois INF

David M. McDonald was born April 7, 1833 in Logan County, Kentucky to Wm. M. and Jane D. McClellan McDonald, one of at least 9 children. The McDonalds had removed to Randolph County, Illinois by 1855. David continued in the family farming business and married Mary Margaret Baird on 30 September, 1858. In 1860 the couple were living at T5S R6W, had 1 child and had at least 3 before David died in 1865.
David and his two brothers Granville and James H. all enlisted in the Union Army Aug 20, 1861, for 3-yr tours, and mustered in at Springfield, Camp Butler. David's military records do not provide much information but he enlisted at age 27 as a married man and a private. He re-enlisted as a veteran in the Union Army at Vicksburg, MS January 1, 1864 and was promoted to Sergeant on Jan 24th. He was again promoted to 1LT April 18, 1865 at Raleigh, N.C. and transferred from Co. S to Co. C., but was mustered out July 17, 1865 at Louisville, KY, a few days earlier than the rest of the unit in Chicago. He died 4 months later on November 15, 1865 at the age of 32. David must have been a very sick man when he completed his tour of duty, but he survived the entire war and some of the worst battles. He was declared Invalid with Dependents before he died and Mary later claimed his pension.
Mary never remarried but raised their 3 children who would have been 6 years and under: Martha J., Granville M. and Georgia. The 1880 Census shows the family living in Sparta and Granville working as farm labor. The 1900 Census has Mary, age 64, living with daughter Martha Huey's family, including 7 grandchildren. Mary died in 1903 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Sparta, IL with David.
Four sons of the McDonald clan fought in the Civil War: David, Granville, James H. and William. James was killed in Atlanta and David died soon after returning home. Three McDonalds are buried in Union.
Having fought the entire length of the Civil War, David's service record is lengthy. Please refer to https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-battle-units-detail.htm?battleUnitCode=UIL0030RI
