Norman Leistad

Norman Gudmund Leistad was born February 20, 1913 in Clay Twp., 11/2 miles west of Elk Horn on the family farm, the youngest of nine children of John and Maren (Jensen) Leistad. John Leistad, born in Trondhjem, Norway in 1862 -came to this country in 1883. His wife, born in Fyn, Denmark in 1874 and came to the United States in 1892. Since their marriage in 1893 their entire lives were spent in the Elk Horn Community. Norman was educated in the rural school and Elk Horn High School. When he was 11 years of age he moved with his parents to a farm '/2 mile east of the former family home where he still lives and now owns. He farmed with his father until his marriage when his parents moved to Elk Horn. On May 24, 1935 he was united in marriage to Arlene Berger, daughter of Chris and Emma (Nelson) Berger also of rural Elk Horn. Chris Berger, born in Denmark 1878 and his wife in Malmo, Nebraska 1883. Arlene was born in Shelby County but lived most of her childhood in Council Bluffs, Iowa where she attended grade and high school with one year at Elk Horn High School. To this union three children were born: Ronald of Elk Horn, Iowa; Rosalie, now Mrs. John Potter of McMinnville, Oregon, and Norene of Waterloo, Iowa. They have six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Norman is engaged in farming and also operates the Leistad Income Tax Service in Elk Horn. He is a Past - president of Clay Twp. and Elk Horn School Board for 10 years at the time of re-organization. He has. served on the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Board and building committees, a member of Better Elk Horn Club and active in community and church affairs. His wife has served as organist of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church for the past 18 years and has held various offices in both the church and school.
