William Bernhard Leistad was born September 24, 1898, on a farm near Elk Horn, Iowa. His father, John Leistad (1862-1943) was born near Tronjheim, Norway. His mother, Maren Jensen Leistad (1874-1939) was born in Odense, Denmark. He has two brothers and six sisters. All, but one, living in a radius of three miles. He attended school at Clay #2, finished his education in Tyler, Minnesota, and came back to his father's farm. On June 28, 1921, he was married to Grace Marie Huggett of Fulton, Missouri. Her parents were John Prall Huggett (1878-1967) of Fulton, Missouri, and Sally Jane Huggett, nee Nevins (1878-1956) of Carrington, Missouri. She had one sister, Hazel Clara (1905-1956). Bill and Grace had one son, John Nevins, born March 8, 1929. On November 6, 1955, John was married to Alyce Kathleen Nielsen of Minden, Nebraska. Her parents are Emerald and Olga
(Petersen) Nielsen of Minden. John and Kathy have three children: Noel John, born November 19, 1956; Faye Ellen, born November 5, 1959; and Ann Kathleen, born April 13, 1965. They spent 34 years on their farm west of Elk Horn and in 1955 they built and moved to a home in Elk Horn. When living on the farm, Bill was elected to the Triple A and served on that for several years. He has participated in various fund drives for Shelby Co., and served on the town council since moving to Elk Horn. They are members of Elk Horn Lutheran Church where he has been a trustee, and she has worked with church groups. She taught school in Guthrie, Missouri, and Clay #2 in Shelby County, Iowa, and was librarian for the town library, sponsored by the Outlook Study Club for many years. She is Past Matron of the Eastern Star at Marne, and is President of the Salem Home Auxiliary.
