Dagny G., daughter of John and Maren (Jensen) Leistad, was born September 21, 1905, at home west of Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country school at Clay #2 through the eighth grade and then stayed at home to help her mother.
On January 16, 1924, Dagny was united in marriage with Elmer Gude on her parent’s farm. Three children were born to this union. They farmed in the Rorbeck and Elk Horn areas. In 1965 they retired and moved into a home beside the park in Elk Horn. Dagny then worked several years as a cook at Salem Lutheran Homes. When Elmer became too ill to care for their yard, he and Dagny moved into an apartment. Elmer died January 23, 1995, and Dagny was able to live on her own until 1999 when she moved into Salem Lutheran Homes.
Dagny was a lifetime member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and a member of the Ladies’ Aide. She was also a member of a card club, country club and Aggravation Club. To pass the time, Dagny enjoyed quilting, crocheting and needlework. She bowled in a league in Atlantic until she was 80 years of age.
On Sunday, August 6, 2006, Dagny died following a brief illness at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa. She was 100 years, 10 months and 16 days of age.
Dagny was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Jerry Gude and eight siblings: Anna Nelson, Olga Pedersen, Bill Leistad, Alfred Leistad, Elna Crouch, Agnes Evans, Norman Leistad and Elsie Bonnesen.
She is survived by a son Arnold Gude and wife Doris of Elk Horn; a daughter Betty and husband Ranald Hansen of Elk Horn; a daughter-in-law Donna Gude of Exira; twelve grandchildren: Fred Gude and wife Diane, Mary and husband Denny Moore, Dave Gude and wife Pam, Paul Gude and wife Annette, Jo and husband Duane Christofferson, Connie and husband Bob Doonan, Greg Gude and wife Nettie, Gaye and husband Tom Mussallem, Glen Gude and wife Lori, Glee and husband Jim Smith, Lisa and husband Roger Parker and Lori and husband Don Moldenhauer; 31 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Arlene Leistad of Elk Horn; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Elmer Gude was born May 19, 1903 in Elk Horn, the son of Fred and Laura Gude. Dagny was born September 21, 1905 in Clay Township, a daughter of John and Maren Leistad. Elmer and Dagny were married January 16, 1924.

The Gudes lived on a farm near Marne, Iowa from 1924 through 1926, then in 1927 and 1928 they farmed in Clay Township, moving from there t oa farm southeast of Elk Horn in 1929, where they farmed until they retired to Elk Horn in 1965. Elmer did part -time work for the Town of Elk Horn for a few years after moving to town. Dagny also worked part-time at the Salem Homes for some time.
Elmer and Dagny have three children: Arnold (Doris); Betty (Ranald) Hansen; and Jerry (Donna). Elmer passed away January 23, 1995.
