Amanda Jane Phillips was born in 1823 in Fleming County, Kentucky, the eleventh child & fourth daughter of Charles & Sarah 'Twilley' Phillips. Her family moved to Coal Creek, Montgomery County, Indiana shortly after 1840.

Amanda married William Grenard on 19 Apr 1842 in Montgomery County, Indiana. She was his 3rd wife. (William was previously married to America Fisher by whom he had 3 children. After her death he married Mary A. Glaze who died shortly after the marriage.)

William and Amanda had eight children:
1. James Phillip Grenard (1843-1930)
2. Sarah E. Grenard (1845-1859)
3. Elisha Grenard (1847-1900)
4. Veazy 'Veezy' Grenard (1848-1870)
5. George Grenard (1851-1880)
6. John W. Grenard (1852-1926)
7. Mary Jane Grenard (1854-1877)
8. Simeon J. Grenard (1857-1947)

Amanda's husband William died in 1859 leaving her with seven living children as well as one from his first marriage.

Amanda's sister Mary Phillips wife of James Albert Glaze Sr. died in childbirth in Apr. 1860 leaving him with 16 living children (2 died young).

Amanda Jane Phillips Grenard married James Albert Glaze, Sr. on 28 Sep 1860 bringing her family to his family which totaled 24 sons and daughters.

Amanda & James had 4 more children with 2 living.
1. Eva Lavica Glaze (1861-1903)
2. Infant Glaze (1863-1863)
3. Samuel Glaze (1864-1865)
4. Ira Green Glaze (1866-1934)

So amongst the merged families there were 7 children who died young or in infancy, 26 who lived becoming adults. This is a total of 33.

What a legacy Amanda left with her care of these children.

Her husband James Albert died in 1901 and Amanda died 9 years later in 1910. They are both buried next to each other in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.

("It appears that the headstone that Amanda Glaze would have shared with her husband was never completed. His name is recorded with plenty of space below for her name to be added, but unfortunately no one completed the task. The cemetery office confirms that this plot is the location of her grave.". . . . from contributor Karen Hedrick)
