Sarah Catherine "Kitty" Cunningham was the eighth of twelve children born to Mickens Carr Cunningham and Elizabeth "Betsy" Sivells Cunningham, who farmed in the Trigg Furnace community of Trigg County, Kentucky. Her paternal grandparents were William Cunningham, and Nancy Carr, who migrated from Abemarle County, Virginia to Trigg County in 1818. The Cunningham clan was from Ayrshire, Scotland just west of Glasgow. Her maternal grandfather, Thomas Sivells, fought in the American Revolution and came to Trigg from Virginia, settling on his 148-acre land grant on Muddy Fork Creek.

On March 25, 1868, "Kitty" married Alfred Perry Cunningham, her cousin. She and her husband lived on their farm near Trigg Furnace where they had seven children, three of whom died in infancy.

On September 13, 1891, she died at the age of 42, and was survived by her husband, three daughters: Olive P., Metoka, Pocahontas, and a son, Hodge Gregston. She was originally buried in the Cunningham Cemetery and was moved to Little River Cemetery upon the impoundment of Lake Barkley.
