John's daughter-in-law, Edith Knight, explained the family had gone to Paraquay, Arkansas to pick cotton. When he came back to Illinois, he and his young son Will were deathly sick with "the fever". It was believed they contracted the fever when camping near a low lying area near a river. John did not survive, but young Will recovered, although he lost the sight in one eye.

NOTE: Many thanks to Amanda Martinez, 3rd great-granddaughter of John W., for sharing this photograph provided by her grandfather, Paul Whobrey Jr., great-grandson of John W. Whobrey. July, 2018
