John R Boatner's mother died when he was eleven years of age and it is unknown who raised him after this. His father, a Civil War Veteran, passed away in 1908 after living for a few years in an Alabama Confederate Home. Two of his half siblings lived in the Dallas area. He moved around a lot, worked as a Texas Prison Guard from 1890-1899, married one of his cousins in 1903 but was divorced in Dallas in 1909. He lived in Dallas and later in Houston. In 1910 he was living in Missouri and working as a Foreman on the Railroad. It is unknown if he married again, he passed away in a Nursing Home in Harris County Texas, and the only document found for him, his Texas Death Certificate indicates that his remains were on hold for disposition at the time the document was prepared. So his exact place of burial is unknown but likely in Harris County, Texas. He has been located in only one census, the 1910, where he was in the 1880, 1900, 1920, 1930, and 1940 are unknown. This leads to thinking that he was quite transit.
