Lucy R Bufford Boatner, wife of James William Boatner departed this life on 4 October 1881 likely in Calvert, Robertson County, Texas. Lucy left a will dated 20 July 1881 in which she appointed her husband, J W Boatner, executor. The will was witnessed by J. L. Boatner, and M. S. Boatner, brothers of her husband. The fact that she made out a will in July and died a couple of months later indicated that she likely was aware that she had a terminal illness. Cause of death is not mentioned in the Probate record. Her probate was filed with the county soon after her death on 22 October 1881. It appears that she held ownership of real property that was community property with her husband. Her father-in-law's [John Root Boatner] probate record, indicates that she purchased from his estate 119 acres of land on 17 January 1881 for $503.00. This land was likely located near Elliott, Robertson County, Texas where J R Boatner lived. This is only 8 or 9 months before her death. It is possible that she had received some type of settlement of a probate from her parents to acquire this money? Apparently, this real property was left to her estate, with her husband getting his community share. She also specified in her will that she had in force a $3000.00 life insurance policy that she bequeathed to her two surviving children, Margaret Eliza, age 13 and John Ruth Boatner, age 9.
