Lucy R Bufford Boatner, wife of James William Boatner departed this life on 4 October 1881 likely in Calvert, Robertson County, Texas. Lucy left a will dated 20 July 1881 in which she appointed her husband, J W Boatner, executor. The will was witnessed by J. L. Boatner, and M. S. Boatner, brothers of her husband. The fact that she made out a will in July and died a couple of months later indicated that she likely was aware that she had a terminal illness. Cause of death is not mentioned in the Probate record. Her probate was filed with the county soon after her death on 22 October 1881. It appears that she held ownership of real property that was community property with her husband. Her father-in-law's [John Root Boatner] probate record, indicates that she purchased from his estate 119 acres of land on 17 January 1881 for $503.00. This land was likely located near Elliott, Robertson County, Texas where J R Boatner lived. This is only 8 or 9 months before her death. It is possible that she had received some type of settlement of a probate from her parents to acquire this money? Apparently, this real property was left to her estate, with her husband getting his community share. She also specified in her will that she had in force a $3000.00 life insurance policy that she bequeathed to her two surviving children, Margaret Eliza, age 13 and John Ruth Boatner, age 9. There is believed to have been at least one other child, Lyda Boatner who died before 1881? The two minor children were handled under a separate Probate Procedure dated 5 December 1881. In her will, she directed her administrator, James W Boatner, to set up a cash trust with the insurance money for them to get apparently at majority and/or to help pay their expenses while minors. Since she left a will, and her husband was made executor, it was apparently a simple straight forward case, and there are no accounting documents in her original probate file, but there are accounting records for the minors through 1884 for the minor administration file, and after that they are missing from the file. Not sure if the administration ended at that time, or are just missing from the file? Lucy is buried in the Calvert City Cemetery alone and her grave is marked with a substantial stone, which due to age [130 years of age in 2011] is relative faded now. There appears to be at least four burial spaces on both sides of her grave that do not have markers. It is unknown, but likely. that at least some of her children are buried here.

The minors' administration procedure or guardianship was filed in Robertson County in January 1882. Many of the expenses listed in the accounting are just normal everyday expenses. Some of the expenses noted are: $5.50 for a train ticket to Georgetown [Helen J Boatner Glasscock, the minor's aunt lived here], 2 2/3 months of music lessons for Margaret $4.00, 1 ladies hat $4.00, train ticket from Georgetown to Hearne. Texas $5.50, Hotel bill in Hearne $1.00, train ticket to Monticello, Arkansas $13.75, room and board in Arkansas $24.00, [dates are not indicated on the expenses except when the court approved them later]. For John R Boatner, there is a train ticket to Monticello, Arkansas for $13.75, and for Margaret there is a deposit with C L Burke in Monticello, Arkansas in the amount of $100.00, and also with J N Moore, at Typo, Arkansas for $155.00. There are like expenses for the year 1883 and 1884. 1884 is the last year of expenses listed. It appears that the children stayed with their aunt in Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas, and spent considerably time in Monticello, and Typo Arkansas. There are several expenses for music lessons for Margaret, and tuition and school book for both children which indicate that they did get an education. Both of these locations were in Drew County, Arkansas and likely where Lucy had relatives. The Boatners had lived there during the Civil War. Typo is now in Lincoln County, Arkansas since the county borders were altered in 1871 after the family moved to Texas. Margaret Eliza Boatner has not been identified in any census. She was born in ca 1868, and where she lived, who she married, and when she died is unknown. John Ruth Boatner was born 1872 per the the probate, but according to his Texas Death Certificate he was born 5 September 1870 in Hearne, Robertson County, Texas. He died 10 February 1948 in Bellaire, Harris County, Texas at the Price Convelance Home. Where he is buried is unknown. His funeral was handled by the Morales Funeral Home in Houston. He was married briefly to one of his cousin, Lyda Cain, but they were divorced in Dallas, and she remarried, but unknown if he did. He has not been found in any census either.
