Adam Fleener was born in Rush County, Ind., October 1, 1833. He moved with his parents to Iowa when a boy, where he spent many years. He was married to Miss Sarah Tucker in Page County, Ia., in 1853. To this union were born 13 children, seven of whom with his aged wife survive him. The living children are: John M. Fleener, Clarinda, Ia.; Mrs. Annie Shaw, Tyrone, Okla.; Charles and William Fleener, Downs; Mrs. Susan King, Pierz, Minn.; Della Bradskey, Portis, Kas.; Ella Sadie, Clarksgrove, Minn. His youngest son, Fred Fleener, was killed in an accident in Raton Tunnel in New Mexico, in August, 1913.
Mr. Fleener united with the Christian Church at the age of 22 and all his life has endeavored to lead a consistent life. He had a clear and simple faith. He was devoted to his family, having been married 63 years, and in his old age cared for his invaled wife alone much of the time.
Mr. Fleener came to Kansas with his family many years ago, but returned to Iowa for a few years. He returned to Downs about six years ago, and has made his home here since that time. He was a quiet likeable old gentleman and kept a large list of friends because of congenial ways and his honest, simple life.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church on Friday, December 8, conducted by Rev. Charles W. Good, pastor of the Congregational church, and interment was made in the Downs Cemetery.
We want to thank the neighbors and friends that have been so good and kind during the sickness and death of our father. Such deeds will never be forgotten by us. Charles and William Fleener. THE DOWNS NEWS AND THE DOWNS TIMES, Downs, Kansas, 14 Dec. 1916.
