Eldredge LeRoy is the firstborn of eight children to Culbert Roy Howes and Leah LaRene Hoggard. His parents were married in Provo, Utah and then traveled to Canada where Roy was born. They didn't stay very long; their next child, Leah Leorene, was born in American Fork, Utah. They moved to Idaho shortly after that. The family lived in the Newdale-Teton area. Eldredge's remaining siblings are: Phyllis, Boyd Hoggard, Lyle Ann, Heber Rex, Garth Henry, and Jewell Donetta.
Roy married Florence Preale Gillette on October 29, 1931. They lived first in Teton and then in Tucson, Arizona where Roy worked as a music teacher, before moving back to Idaho. Roy and Florence became parents to two children: Keith and Sharon. They later divorced.
In March 1956 Roy married Orpha Draney, who he taught to play electric steel guitar. They both played in a dance band for several years. They owned and operated several motels in Idaho Falls, California and Lander WY.
When Roy was diagnosed with cancer, Orpha stayed faithfully by his side.
