Howard E. Knapstad passed peacefully on December 30, 2004, after a short battle with leukemia. He was 81 years old.
Howard was born on April 4, 1923, in Kent, Washington, to Nickoli and Olga (Sorenson) Knapstad. He attended school in Kent and then earned a GED. He worked on dairy farms and also worked on fishing boats in Alaska from 1941 through 1949. At that time he completed his apprentice in the Carpenters Union in Seattle where he was a member until 1987 when he retired. He married Adah (Maxfield) in 1948 and they had 5 children; Chris, Wayne, Dann, Connie and Sheila. The family moved to Kennewick in 1965.
He loved his farm animals and always had horses, cattle and dogs. He especially liked Boston terrier bulldogs. Howard and Adah have traveled extensively (Mexico, Japan, Australia and Europe). Howard was especially proud of his Norwegian and Danish heritage and was a member of the Sons of Norway for 18 years.
Howard is survived by his wife, Adah (Maxfield) Knapstad, son Wayne (Mary Lee) of Volcano, Hawaii, daughters Connie Fittro (Tim) of Peoria, AZ, and Sheila Jameson (Randy) of Kennewick, 6 grandchildren, Sean, Nikki, Mathew, Melissa, Kyle and Spencer, siblings Mae Heinrich, Helen Bennett and Glenn Knapstad. He is preceded in death by two sons, Chris and Dann, and his brother, Leonard.
Services will be held at Columbia Community Church on Gage Boulevard in Richland on Thursday, January 6, at noon. Viewing is on Wednesday, January 5 from 2-5 p.m. at Mueller's Funeral Home on Union Street in Kennewick. A graveside burial will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Kent, WA on Saturday, January 8 at 11 a.m. Donations can be sent to the Tri-City Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick.
