Mae Jane Maas, age 86, a resident of the Community Memorial Home in Osakis, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 1993 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Mae Jane Bruzek was born on December 8, 1906 in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County, to Wenzel and Mary (benesh) Bruzek. She attended country school District 19. She worked in the restaurant business most of her life, owning a restaurant in Barrett for many years. She moved to St. Paul where she owned and operated Mae's Cafe. It was in St. Paul that she met and married her husband, Arnold Maas in 1942. After their retirement they settled south of Remer on Coffin Lake and wintered in Mesa, Arizona. Arnold passed away in February of 1992 and Mae became a resident at the Community Memorial Home shortly after that. Mae was a former member of the Eastern Star. She was an excellent cook who had spent her lifetime enjoying preparing and serving food to the delight of her family, friends and customers. She also enjoyed eating out and sampling other cook's expertise. Mae enjoyed playing cards and having coffee or working on a ceramics project. She always had a green thumb for growing beautiful flowering plants in her home. She was a dear sister and aunt who will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Funeral services for Mae were held on Saturday, May 1, 1993 at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria with Father Al Ludwig officiating. Interment followed the service at St. Mary's Cemetery in Alexandria. Pallbearers were Verlyn Bruzek, Philip Mullen, Clarence Cihlar, Clarence Reichmann, Marvin Bruzik and Dean Collins. Mae is survived by her sister, Christine Patrick and her brother Edward Bruzek, both of Osakis. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arnold in 1992, four brothers: Frank, Wenzel (Jim), Joe and John Bruzek and one sister, Anna Zavadil. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis.
