Gladys N. Bourne, Patawomeck elder
Gladys Newton Bourne, 94, of Stafford County died at her home Friday, May 19, 2000.
A native of the White Oak area of Stafford, Mrs. Bourne was know as the matriarch of her close-knit family. She always made room in her family, too, for those in need of help.
She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was the oldest member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe. She was the widow of Henry S. Bourne.
Survivors include four daughters: Marjorie Shackelford of King George County; Charlotte Cooper and Hazel Stevens, both of Stafford, and Edna Wilson of Spotsylvania County; a son, Vernon Bourne of Caroline; 20 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Earl Bourne.
A funeral will be held at noon Sunday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Andrew L. Tennison officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mary Washington Hospice, 2217 Princess Anne St., Suite 002-1, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
