Benjamin Swain Simpson was born 9 July 1769 in Chowan County, North Carolina, son of Samuel and Mary Swain Simpson. Sam recorded the births of his children on the flyleaf of his Kirk of Scotland catechism, which found its way into his Revolutionary War Pension application file.

Ben was first married to Mary Wyatt who bore him at least 4 children before her death circa 1812-13. His second wife was Margaret Garrison whom he married in 1813 in Orange County, NC. Ben appears on the 1800, 1810 and 1820 Census of Orange County.

Ben's son-in-law, Abraham Lewis, came to Indiana in 1822 and purchased land in Putnam County (Bureau of Land Management-General Land Office Records). He then appears to have returned to NC and convinced his father-in-law to move to Indiana, too. In the mid 1820's Ben Simpson and Abe Lewis sell their land in Orange County NC to Ben's oldest son, Lemuel W. Simpson (Orange County land records). Ben and Abe then appear on the 1830 Census of Putnam County.

In 1838, Ben's son Ben (who is on the 1830 Census still in Orange County) arrives in Putnam and buys land. Beginning in 1837, Ben's sons Jacob, Luke and Zimri also buy land in Putnam County (BLM-GLO Records). However, in 1840, Ben the elder is not on the Census, but Margaret Simpson is listed as the head of a household. She also appears twice on the 1850 Census of Putnam, once in step-son Luke's household, the other in son Jacob's household. (She lived with both Jacob and Zimri and probably died in the late 1850's at Zimri's home near Russiaville, Indiana.)

Ben's grandson, Henry Simpson, left an extensive biographic sketch in the 1883 History and Biographic Sketches of Woodford County, Illinois outlining the family's migration from North Carolina the the midwest.

Maps of early land purchase in the Putnam County Library show the Simpson properties were about a mile south and west of the village of Manhatten.

It appears that all of Ben's children moved to other places, with the exception of his daughter Mary "Polly" Simpson Lewis. She, husband Abraham and several of their children are bured in the Boone-Hutcheson Cemetery, a few miles north of Manhatten.

Finally, the descendents of Ben's sons have no record that any of them had sons named Ben - with the exception of Jacob, who's son Benjamin S. Simpson is buried in the Olio Township Cemetery at Eureka (Woodford County) Illinois.
