Fidel was born in the Tyrol region of Austria in 1831. In 1852, at the age of 21, emigrated to the United States. He traveled to Iowa where he settled and worked as a shoemaker. In 1858 or 1859. he married Rachel Alice Weeks (1839-1900) in Jones County, Iowa. Rachel and Fidel had six children: Emma Mary Alger (1861-1955), John Hannibal Alger (1863-1920), Lola Alger (1869-1917), Minnie Alger (1871-1943), William "Willie" Alger (1873-1902), and Kathryn E "Katie" Alger (1876-1915). In June 1880, he was admitted as a patient to the Whiteside County Poor Farm where he died on 9 Jul 1881.

According to local records, Fidel was buried in Potters Field. The original Potters Field was full around 1880. Burials were then began in the “new” Potter Field at Grove Hill Cemetery. There are no recording of Potter Field burials in the Grove Hill register.
