Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 26 September 1901 and retired on 11 July 1922 as a Chief Petty Officer/Chief Water Tender. He was a WWI veteran and served in Brooklyn NY and Boston MA on the USS Missouri and USS Celtic during his career.
About 1911, he married a widow, Flora Hazeltine Spofford, and helped raise her sons, Harry, William, and Russell. She died on February 14, 1938 in NY and Joe moved to Springfield near his sister Mary (Mollie) Kinney.
Surviving are his beloved sisters Mollie Kinney of Springfield, Sarah Daly of Chicago, dearly beloved great nieces and nephews Mary, Frank, Johnny, Rose, Jim, and June Devine of Virginia IL, niece Helen Lunden and nephews Patrick and John Daly, of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved niece Mary (Kinney) Devine, and brothers-in-law Thomas Kinney and John Daly.
