Mr. Ryan was born in Ballykillaboy, Kilmacow, County Kilkenny, Ireland, the son of Michael and Mary (Fennelly) Ryan. He married Sarah A. Loughry on June 1, 1875 in the Parish of Kilmacow, County Kilkenny. They had four children, Mary Josephine, Michael Joseph and an infant daughter, born in County Kilkenny and Sarah Rose, born in Chicago. James and Sarah and first two children emigrated to America in May 1880 aboard the "City of Chester".
He was for many years a resident of Virginia where he made many friends. Following his retirement from active life, he made his home in Chicago for several years and later returned to Virginia to make his home with his daughter, Mollie Kinney. His wife Sarah preceded him in death November 16, 1887 in Calumet City, Illinois.
He was a member of Holy Name Society and faithful member of the Catholic Church.
He leaves to mourn, his sisters, Miss Catherine Ryan of Athens, Illinois, Mrs. Mary Cassin of County Kilkenny, Ireland, two daughters, Mary (Mollie) Kinney and husband Thomas of Virginia, Illinois, Sarah Daly and husband John of Chicago, one son, Joseph Ryan and wife Flora of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Mary (Kinney) Devine of Ashland, Illinois, Helen Daly, Patrick Daly, and John Daly, of Chicago, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sarah, infant daughter, brothers, John Ryan, Reverend Father Michael Ryan, Reverend Father Lawrence Ryan, Peter Ryan, sister Alice Freyne Mackey, infant sister Catherine Ryan and grandson Fletcher Kinney.
Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Monday morning. Reverend Father Joseph O'Dwyer officiating. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Devlin, James Meade, James Newell, James Maslin, Robert McKelvy, and James McCarty.
He is my great great Grandfather.
