Elwood Merle Eiker, of Emmitsburg, departed this life April 18 in Martinsburg, WV.

He was a son of the late Frank Samuel and Laura VanSickle Eiker.

Mr. Eiker was a member of the Incarnation United Church of Christ, Emmitsburg; the Blue Ridge Sportsman's Club; many antique tractor clubs and a founding member of the Indian Lookout Conservation Club, Emmitsburg. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6658 and the American Legion, Francis X. Elder Post 121, both of Emmitsburg and was a World War II veteran who fought in the Pacific and European War. In his younger years, Mr. Eiker earned the archery championship trophy and many medals.

He was a professional plasterer with the Plasterers Local 96, Washington, D.C. for 40 years and had done work at the Cathedral in D.C. and many other state and federal buildings until his retirement in 1980. Following retirement, Mr. Eiker played the doebro with the Blue Ridge Pickers.

He was a grandson of Union Civil War veteran, Samuel VanSickle.

He was the husband of Vera Andrew Eiker for 56 years and surviving, in addition to her, are six sons, Nevin A. Eiker, Kenneth E. Eiker, and John S. Eiker, all of Emmitsburg, Morris A. Eiker of Fairfield, PA, and Clifford R. Eiker and Marvin R. Eiker, both of Thurmont, MD; five daughters, Wanda L. Winegardner of Marion, IL, Beatrice F. Waybright of Gettysburg, and Nina M. Eiker, Laura A. Eiker, and Cathy E. Eiker, all of Emmitsburg; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gilbert Eiker of Emmitsburg.

He was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Downin; two brothers, Francis Eiker and Robert Eiker; and three sisters, Ruth Kemp, Betty Wireman and Helen Weinski.
