Lawrence E. Buchanan, 83, Shelbyville, died Wednesday at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Born July 7, 1916, in Versailles, he was the son of Charles and Bessie (Bullard) Buchanan. He married Dorothy (Clapp) Buchanan on Dec. 27, 1941, and she survives.

Mr. Buchanan was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a machine operator at Cummins Engine Company, Columbus, for 31 years. He retired in 1981.

He moved to Shelbyville seven months ago from Columbus.

He was a member of Burney United Methodist Church, Burney, Milford Masonic Lodge 94 and Columbus American Legion.

Other survivors include two daughters, Paula Buchanan, Columbus, and Mrs. Jerry (Susan) Bafford, Shelbyville; two sisters, Mary Veerkamp, Wildwood, Fla., and Thelma Martin, Columbus; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one infant son and two brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn E. George Funeral Home, St. Paul, with the Rev. William Leake officiating.

Burial will be in Van Pelt Cemetery, Shelby County.

Friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lawrence E. Buchanan, 83, of Shelbyville died at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

A resident of Shelby County for seven months, Mr. Buchanan was formerly of Columbus and was a machine operator at Cummins Engine Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Burney United Methodist Church, Milford Masonic Lodge and Columbus American Legion. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn E. George Funeral Home at St. Paul with the Rev. William Leake officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today. Burial will be at Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County.
