Hugh Mac Thompson, Sr. died peacefully on December 2, 2014 in Blackshear, Georgia at the age of 82.

Hugh Mac was born on September 20, 1932 in Vidalia, Georgia, to the late Thomas Nathanial and Victoria Hall Thompson. He graduated from high school in 1950 and attended Brewton Parker College where he played basketball and baseball. He served in the Air Force for three years from 1950-1953 and then returned to Brewton Parker College to work on his degree. He moved to Pierce County in 1955.

In 1962, he bought Pierce Timber Company, Inc. and through his hard work, it has become one of the community’s most successful operations. He acted as an equal partner to Darrell Thomas forming D & M Trucking, the forerunner of what is now known as Thom’s Transport. Together he and Mr. Thomas also began D & M Sales & Salvage, which became D & M International, Sales. He was owner of numerous forestry related businesses.

He was very active in the community. This was evident by the countless hours of volunteering in various clubs and organizations. He served on the Pierce County Industrial Authority, the Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, the American Legion, the Forestry Board, the Southeast and Georgia Forestry Associations, the American Pulpwood Association, and Duck’s Unlimited to name a few. He also served on the Blackshear City Council from 1982 to 1988 and served as a member and Chairman of the Pierce County Recreation Board from it inception to 1982. He served as a director of the Peoples Bank from 1984 to 2006. In 2002, he was named “Pierce County Citizen of the Year.”

He was an unselfish man who continually helped others. His love of athletics only was exceeded by his love of young people and his desire to see them enjoy sports and spend their time in activities that promoted growth, health, sportsmanship and character.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He taught his family the importance of hard work and respect.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, George Thomas, Louis Hall, John Mercer, and James Earl Thompson and one sister, Sarah Thompson Gibson all of Mt. Vernon, Georgia.

H.M. is survived by his wife, Mary Grace Fiveash Thompson; sister, Betty Lou Thompson Gilbert of Macon; daughter, Terri DeLoach (husband, David); son, Hugh Mac Thompson, Jr. (wife, Kristi) all of Blackshear. His grandchildren include Nikki DeLoach Goodell, (husband, Ryan) of Glendale, CA; LeAnne Dixon, (husband, Justin); Brett Addison DeLoach; Hugh Mac “Trey” Thompson, III; Tessa Loran Thompson; and Tristin Elizabeth Thompson all of Blackshear.
