Mr. James Earl Thompson, age 85 of Mt. Vernon, died Wednesday, December 12, 2012 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County and lived in Montgomery County most of his life. He was employed as a warden with the Georgia Department of Corrections in Savannah, Jesup, Alto, Buford, and retired from Montgomery Correctional Institution. He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Prison Wardens Association and in 1965, served as the youngest President. He was a farmer, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a member, deacon, and chairman of the finance committee of Ailey Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, John Barry Nichols; parents, Tom and Vickie Hall Thompson; and four siblings, George Thompson, Louis Thompson, John Thompson, and Sarah Thompson Gibson.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Anita "Ludy" Fountain Thompson of Mt. Vernon; four children, Tommy Thompson and wife Jean of Highland Ranch, Colorado, "Sissie" Duncan and husband Terry of Jesup, Dr. Jim Barlow and wife Dr. Trish Barlow of Griffin, Ricky Barlow and wife Robin of Crystal River, Florida; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Nichols of Jesup; one sister, Betty Gilbert and husband Phil of Macon; one brother, Mac Thompson and wife Mary of Blackshear; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday, December 14th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Roger Branch, Reverend C.B. Easterlin, and Reverend Bob Brewer officiating.


Burial will follow in the Glenn J. Thompson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
