Laurence was born the 24th November 1907, Springvale, Moneyneena, County Derry, Ireland, the ninth of eleven children born to David O'Kane and Mary Ann Hegarty. Laurence decided his future was in America and on the 22nd February 1930 he boarded the SS Cameronia at the Port of Derry with his sister Sarah Annie, arriving New York, 04th March 1930.
On the 18th March 1942, Laurence joined the Army of the United States, Camp Upton, Yaphank, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York. He was a Private First in the 560 AAF Base Unit and during World War 11, was based in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was decorated with the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon W/3 and the Purple Heart in recognition of military service during World War 11.
