David was born 19th August 1903, Springvale, Moneyneena, Co, Derry, Ireland, the sixth of eleven children born to David O'Kane and Mary Ann Hegarty. David decided his future was to be in America and on the 30th October 1926 he boarded the SS Transylvania at the Port of Derry, arriving New York, 08th November 1926. He married Johanna (Noreen) Quill. 13th October 1940. New York.
David was co-founder of the New York City County Derry Society with his cousin Laurence Hegarty in 1930.
