A Rooster's Tragic "Finish"
Colonel Jerry Mercer, the silver-tongued auctioneer, recently moved with family from the Belfast neighborhood to the Careytown district.
With the family went a large rooster, and according to the colonel that rooster was - not it was - an intelligent ruler in the barnyard.
"Why, sir, that rooster was educated. He could_______________" "Where is this wonderful bird, colonel?" "Alas, he is no more.
A clergyman from New Vienna called at our house and announced that he would
remain for dinner. And with the salty tears irrigating his handsome cheeks, his chest cracking in agony and his frame bent as if in pain, the colonel tottered to the door and passed into the street, leaving the newspaper man to ponder long and earnestly on the uncertainty of a rooster's life after a clergyman announced that he will remain for dinner.

"New Vienna Reporter"
The family tells the story that Jerry was an auctioneer. He would call an auction and
sometimes in-between he would sing or have his daughter get up and sing.
Jerry was a big fellow and had a deep voice.
He would play Santa Claus at Christmas time in Hillsboro.

"Jerry" Mercer
Jerry Mercer, the auctioneer, who lived and laughed and scattered to the four winds his
gospel of happiness, was perhaps the best known of all the "boys" who went out of this neighborhood, noted for it's many young men who made good.
Trained from boyhood in the old choir at Union Chapel, his voice was of rich and pleasing quality, his manner and every gesture friendly, the attributes that go to make salesmanship,
he never failed to attract and entertain the crowd and get the high dollar at the farm sales he cried.
From a family of "go-getters," he early learned that anything worth doing at all, was worth doing well, and his active unselfish life is a pleasant memory.
