Eugene Tolman Smith
1931 ~ 2014

Our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather, was peacefully taken home to reunite with his family and return into the loving arms of his Father in Heaven on November 12, 2014.

Eugene was born on October 1, 1931 in Sandy, Utah to Arthur Eugene and Lucile Tolman Smith. He was the oldest of five children.

Eugene was a lifelong resident of Draper. He loved the beautiful Draper valley, nestled close to the mountains, that he called home.

Eugene was a lifelong, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He expressed deep gratitude for serving in many callings both, church and civic. Eugene loved the outdoors and shared that love in the Scouting Program throughout his life. He was a recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in the Boy Scouts of America.

He married Aleen Steadman on Sept 22, 1950. Eugene was drafted and served courageously in the KOREAN WAR. Eugene and Aleen later divorced.

In 1970, Eugene married his sweetheart Julia Barnes and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on Jan 22, 1976. He loved serving in the Church and especially working alongside his wife, Julia. He was devout in his temple service and loved serving as a temple worker at the Jordan River and Draper Temples for 12 years. Eugene and Julia served an LDS Mission on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. He came to truly love the Apache people.
Eugene and Julie were always working together on a quilt, or other project. Eugene especially loved spending time with family and would always be found visiting and serving his many children and grandchildren. Eugene served tirelessly and with all of his heart. His life was a testimony to us all. We will miss his sparkling blue eyes, quiet demeanor, loving disposition and his cheeky scouting jokes.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Barnes Smith, and his children: Ricky E. (Shelley) Smith; Greg S. (June) Smith; Amy Smith-Jensen; Elsa (John) Dornoff; Melinda (John) Klugiewicz and Robert Max Smith; 24 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. brother Nolan (Kay)Smith, sisters: Dorothy Allgood and Esther Kinder.

The family extends deepest heartfelt thanks to all of his many friends and family who have poured out their love and offered service where needed. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff at the Alta View Hospital IHC Critical Care Unit for their loving care.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE LEAVING FLOWERS FOR MY BELOVED BROTHER.

My brother Eugene was one of the sweetest brothers in the world. When he came back from Korea he brought me a beautiful box with pink silk Pajamas and slippers with embroidered roses on them. They were gorgeous. For his 9 year old sister at the time it was truly a wonderful gift.

He was always so caring and tender hearted. He worried about me walking home after tending his kids at night, so he always insisted on driving me home. He was always there for me.

He had such a wonderful sense of humor that everyone would laugh at his silly jokes. He was loved by so many people.

I had the honor of giving a tribute at his funeral. Which I was happy to do for his wife and family. I know his spirit was with me, as my knees were not shaking at all. Thanks for standing there with me Brother. I also wrote a poem for his funeral which I will include below.

There will be an emptiness in my soul with you gone. Please watch over all of us my dear sweet brother.
MAY YOU REST IN SWEET ETERNAL PEACE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to C LOVES M for sponsoring my brothers memorial page.

Birthday blessings Sir:
My Brother Gene

My big brother has gone to heaven-
To a reunion in the sky-
He is celebrating with family–
Reliving his childhood dreams-

He knows those left behind-
Are wiping their eyes and crying-
He says do not weep for me-
For this is how it was meant to be-

Remember me in the morning-
As the sun comes over the hill-
Remember me in the evening-
When the night becomes so still-

Think of me when you see an Eagle –
Flying high in the sky-
And rain drops falling from heaven-
Are just my way of saying Hi-

Smile when you remember my silly jokes-
And know that I am close by-
Watching over all of you-
With a twinkle in my eye-

Remember how much I loved you-
That will never change-
For each of you have a place in my heart-
That cannot be rearranged-

Remember my dear family-
That this is not goodbye-
I will always be with you-
Watching from up high-
