Jay Bahme, 93, of Houston, Texas, died peacefully in his sleep on November 10, 2014 with his wife of almost 57 years, Florence Bahme (nee Kaplan), by his side.

Mr. Bahme was born in Waco, Texas, in 1921, the 5th of six children of Samuel and Jennie Bahme (nee Brickman).

He worked his way through Baylor University and, upon graduating in 1943 with a degree in accounting, immediately enlisted in the United States Navy.

A member of "The Greatest Generation," he served as a communications officer during World War II, on a destroyer, the USS Laffey, which earned the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die" after successfully withstanding a sustained assault by kamikaze bombers during the Battle of Okinawa.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for the wounds he sustained during this battle.

After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he settled in Houston and started a small accounting firm. Over the years, his firm and reputation grew, eventually leading to a successful merger with the nationally-recognized accounting firm of Seidman and Seidman (a precursor to the international firm of BDO Seidman).

He rose to become Managing Partner of Seidman's Houston office and then served as Regional Managing Partner, ultimately becoming a member of the firm's Executive Committee and leading its national mergers and acquisitions group.

He loved his work as a Certified Public Accountant, but thrilled for a challenging game of tennis or a spin in his fire-engine red 1983 Datsun 280Z.

Nothing, however, matched his devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Karen Mantel, Susan Blumenfeld (Glenn) and Jennifer Bahme (Alberto Alvarez), seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his five siblings and son-in-law, Marshall Mantel.

Friends and family are invited to graveside services on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet, Houston.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates contributions in his memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
