Helen E. Courtney was born in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania on 29 July 1903. She was the daughter of Charles Francis Courtney, Sr. and Annie B. (Minnich) Courtney. The younger sister of Gertrude (Courtney) Moore and Charles F. Courtney, Jr., the three were the older siblings of a brother born in 1904 - who subsequently died in childhood (before 1910, as he was not shown with them on the 1910 federal census.)
According to relatives and friends of the Courtney family, Helen was a survivor of polio, which she contracted in her elementary school years. She was beloved by her older brother, known to those same family and friends as "Cholly," who preceded Helen in death. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 1950.
Helen lived until 1955, preceding her mother in death by 3 years. She passed away on 19 July from pneumonia related to chest and spine deformities.
She was interred on 23 July at the Laureldale Cemetery where her father was at rest.
