15 Months Old Child Dies of Poisoning When “Play Doctor” Prescribes
The fifteen months old child of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shane of near Speer, died Monday, Sept. 9, as a result of poisoning from medicine “administered” by an older child of the family while playing physician. The medicine was nux vomica, containing strychnine.
Mr. and Mrs. Shane went to Peoria Monday, leaving the children in the care of her mother, Mrs. Patrick Colgan, of this city, who was visiting at the home of her daughter. At a moment when the grandmother was not watching the child secured the medicine, which had been left by a physician for the use of the mother.
When the drug began to take effect and the baby became violently ill, the older child told of giving the medicine. Mrs. Gill, a neighbor, was at once called, and a physician from Camp Grove sent for, but the little one’s system had absorbed so much of the poison that efforts to save its life were of no avail.
The funeral was held yesterday and burial was in Camp Grove cemetery.
The grief-stricken parents have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.
