He is the brother of Elizabeth Eleanor (Foster) Bryant, Sidney Brewer Foster, Sally Pauline (Foster) Roe, Thomas Lee Foster, Mary Alice (Foster) Wallace, Margaret Pearl (Foster) Trimble, Annie Boyd (Foster) Shackelford, twins Ernest Andrew Foster & Willie Bob Foster and Frank Wilson Foster.
His father, Andrew, served as a Deputy Sheriff for two years and then elected into the prominent position of Sheriff in 1891 and 1893, for two years each time. Also, the influence of his father's upbringing led the family in attending the local active Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
On July 4, 1897, John married Berta Gamel in Commanche County, Texas. They became the parents of Andrew Benjamin "Ben" Foster (1898-1963) and Nona Alvena Foster (1900-2005). John worked as a farmer.
The Census Act of 1899 and subsequent act of February 1, 1900 authorized approximately 58,000 specially hired and trained enumerators to conduct the 1900 census. They received instructions from a booklet. In June 1900, John was the enumerator or census taker for Comanche County, Texas.
Possibly in 1902, John Cowan Foster, age 24, died in Mexico but the circumstances are unconfirmed, as well as, his burial site.
