He, along with his parents, was confirmed into the Episcopalian Church at Harcourt Parish at Kenyon College at the age of 18 in 1833. He converted to the Methodist Episcopalian Church shortly after his marriage to Margaret Cullison in 1848. They moved from Knox County, Ohio to Greene County, IN in 1852. He was licensed to preach by the Bloomfield Quarterly Conference, Oct 9, 1856. He was ordained as a deacon by Bishop Thomson, at Vincennes, IN in 1866. He rode circuit for several years. He and his wife, Dorcas, owned the land the original log Sylvania Church was built on in 1854. He was one of the original trustees. He was a minister, stonemason and farmer by trade. His first residence in Greene County was on an 80 acre farm in the American Bottoms, one mile from the Sylvania Church. He moved from there to Bloomfield, IN then to Linton, IN.
