Bio courtesy of Bob Hamlin: Joseph was born November 17, 1836 at Mt Vernon, Knox County, Ohio to Isaac Hamblin Sr. and Hannah Lewis. He lived there until 1846 . He would spend much of the next 5 or 6 years of his life on wagon trails as his family began their migration by moving to Marquette County, Wisconsin. They left Wisconsin and settled in Delaware County, Iowa in 1851. He spent several years living with his brother Mark Hamblin in Iowa after the death of his mother in 1852. He left Manchester, Iowa for Texas on January 15, 1860.
He worked as a cowboy on the Rodman ranch near Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas until the onset of the Civil War. In the spring of 1862 he left Texas headed for Alabama to join the Union Army. In March of that year he was near Cave Hill, Arkansas when taken prisoner by the Confederate Army. He was taken to Pocahontas Prison, then to Little Rock, Arkansas, then to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Jackson, Mississippi, then on to Columbia, Mississippi. He escaped while being held near the Tombigbee River near Columbia. He made his way to Decatur, Alabama where he joined the 3rd Ohio Vols Calvary, Co L on July 4, 1862. His left eye was injured while engaged in battle at Munfordville, Kentucky. He eventually lost vision in that eye. He spent the winter of 1862 at Camp Smith Hospital near Nashville, Tennessee. He rejoined his company at Murfreesboro, Tennessee in the spring of 1863. His legs were injured while tearing up railroad tracks on Stoneman's Raid. It was said by his comrades that he was the best pistol shot in the command, had an uncanny ability to see after dark and was good at foraging for food. He was known as Alabama Joe. He mustered out on July 13, 1865 at Columbus, Ohio. Upon his release from the army he made his way to his brother Isaac Jr's home in Greene County, Indiana. It was there that he met Penelope Fuller. They married August 29, 1865. Soon after their marriage Joseph & Penelope moved to Kansas. They were back in Greene County, Indiana by 1870. He spent the remainder of his life there.
Joseph was 5' 4 1/2" tall and weighed 120 pounds. He had a ruddy complexion, sandy hair and a red beard.
He was a farmer by trade. He died April 25, 1919.
