They left Wisconsin and settled in Delaware County, Iowa in 1851. He spent several years living with his brother Mark Hamblin in Iowa after the death of his mother in 1852. He left Manchester, Iowa for Texas on January 15, 1860.

He worked as a cowboy on the Rodman ranch near Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas until the onset of the Civil War. In the spring of 1862 he left Texas headed for Alabama to join the Union Army. In March of that year he was near Cave Hill, Arkansas when taken prisoner by the Confederate Army. He was taken to Pocahontas Prison, then to Little Rock, Arkansas, then to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Jackson, Mississippi, then on to Columbia, Mississippi.
