Helena Lena Ellen Andersdotter was born February 7, 1850 in Hassela, Gavleborg, Sweden to Anders Jönsson Norin and Karin Kristoffersdotter Norberg. She worked as a farm maid in Hassela. On July 7, 1868 at the age of 18 she immigrated to North America along with her parents and sister Juliana. They arrived in Center City, Chisago County, Minnesota. At that time, Center City was known as Swede Lake.

They changed their last name to Oman and lived in St. Paul after their marriage for two years. In 1871 they moved to homesteaded land next to her parents near Blomford, Minnesota in Isanti County. Helena and John had eight children over an 18-year period. Her husband John Oman passed away on June 4, 1900 in Isanti Minnesota at the age of 59. They had been married for 30 years. Helena Oman died on November 23, 1923 when she was 73 years old. She is buried in the Big Meadow Cemetery near Bloomford, Minnesota alongside her husband.
