Catharina Eriksdotter was born on April 15, 1834 in Hassela, Gävleborg, Sweden to Karin Kristoffersdotter Norberg and Erik Eriksson. Her parents did not get married and Erik remained in Sweden. Catharina was baptized April 20, 1834 in Hassela. Catharina married Olof Olofsson Bäckvall Selin on March 21, 1857 in the Hassela Kyrka in Hassela, Gävleborg, Sweden. A picture of the interior of the Hassela Kyrka is attached. Olof was a farmhand in Lindsjön, Hassela in 1848 and a carpenter in Bränslen, Hassela in 1858. He had been trained to be a carpenter, and served as "parish-carpenter" (sockensnickaren) for the Hassela Parish. In the wedding book it says: Parish Carpenter (farm hand in 1856) Olof Selin and Maid Catharina Eriksdotter, both in Bäckaräng (crown bride). According to tradition, a crown bride should be a virgin.

Catharina and Olof had two sons when they lived in Bränslen, Hassela, Gävleborg, Sweden. John Jonas Olof Selen was born March 25, 1859 and Anders Andrew Erik Selen was born April 29, 1863. Catharina and Olof received permission to immigrate to North America on May 24, 1869. The family of four left Liverpool, England for Quebec, Canada on the SS Austrian steamship. They arrived in Quebec on June 10, 1869. They travelled to Isanti County in Minnesota and lived near Catharina’s mother, Karin, and her husband, Anders Norin and their children near the town of Bloomford. Catharina and Olof had a third son, August Peter Selen, in Isanti County in 1875. Olof Selin died in Isanti County, Minnesota on January 3, 1891 at the age of 61 when he broke his neck falling off a load of hay. He is buried in the family grave in the North Isanti Baptist Church Cemetery just north of the pump house building. They had been married for 33 years. After Olof’s death, Catharina lived with her son John and his wife Christine in Isanti Township near Bloomford for 22 years. Catharina died May 7, 1913 from heart trouble and had been ailing for some time at the home of her son, John Seline at old Isanti. Her funeral was at the North Isanti Baptist Church where she was a member. Rev. G. T. Sjolander officiated the funeral. She is buried in the family grave at the North Isanti Baptist Church Cemetery next to her husband, Olof. Her death certificate had her name as Katarina Selin. Her obituary had her name as Kathrina Seline.
