The son of Solomon and Elizabeth (Essig)Cassatt, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg October 9, 1861, and mustered into federal service in the field at Cockeysville, Baltimore County, Maryland, (allegedly that same day)as a private with Co. F, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. On December 6, 1862, he was assigned to duty as a wagoner. He was captured at the battle of Carter's Woods on June 15, 1863, he was incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia. Following parole, he was forwarded to Camo Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, and returned to the regiment sometime during October 1863. He was honorably discharged with his company October 13, 1864.

He Married Rebecca Jane Megahan September 13, 1871, and fathered the children you see linked below.
