Howard George Rein passed away Thursday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, surrounded by his family, after a two-year struggle with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease). He was 56 years old.

Howard was born in Hibbing, Minn., on Nov. 21, 1947, to June M. (Haury) and Howard R. Rein. He grew up on the family farm in Bear River, Minn., and attended elementary school in Bear River, junior high and high school in Alango and graduated in 1965 from Cook High School in Cook, Minn. He went on to earn his B.S. degree in 1970 from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., and an M.Ed. from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1980.

Howard married Vicki Baker on Aug. 3, 1974, in Billings. Together, they raised their 3 daughters Kaia, Kirsa and Kelyn, in Bozeman.

Howard began his teaching career at Roosevelt Junior High School in Coon Rapids, Minn. He moved to Bozeman in 1975 and taught science at Bozeman Junior High and then chemistry at Bozeman High School. He coached basketball, football, and started the Girls' Fast Pitch program and was varsity coach for 3 years. He was also a driver's education teacher at BHS and Manhattan High School. Howard reluctantly retired from teaching in June of 2002.

Howard was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed many hours hunting and shooting with Richard T. Orr and Gary Heglund. He loved coaching and watching Hawk sports. He was always available to help with any BHS activities and loved the camaraderie with students, parents and fellow coaches. He was also an active participant in baseball and was a long-time shortstop for the Karl Marks/Colombo's softball team and considered hours spent with the players and their families as some of the best times of his life. He was a member of the Bobcat football stat crew for most of his years in Bozeman.

Howard was a man of strong faith and was a long-time member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He was also an active member of the Bozeman Education Association, serving on the negotiating team and as its president.

Howard was profoundly involved in the art of teaching. He dearly loved kids and his colleagues, savoring a unique relationship with each of them. He made everyone feel special and important, and their loyalty to him was remarkably evident during these last 2 years.

Most of all, Howard was a devoted family man. He was actively involved in all of his daughters' activities, from dancing to skiing, and was their most ardent fan. He enjoyed camping trips with both his and Vicki's families and looked forward to annual visits to family and friends in Minnesota. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed an Alaskan cruise with 12 members of the Rein family this past July.

Howard is survived by his wife of 29 years, Vicki; three daughters: Kaia Kjirsten, Kirsa Brigetta and Kelyn Annika; two sisters: Cheryl (Leonard) Lokken and Christine (Dennis) Moberg; aunts, Grace Rein, Eileen Paciotti and Sigrid Nelson; seven nieces; three nephews; mother-in-law, Helen Baker, and brother-in-law, James (Claudia) Baker; two great-nieces; four great-nephews; and numerous cousins and many loyal friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his father in 1977; his mother in 2003; his sister, Meredith (John, 2000) Krier, in 2002; his sister, Rebecca (Carl) Dahlberg, in 2003; and his father-in-law, Leo Baker, in 1983.

Rein's ashes will be mixed with petals from the memorial bouquets and scattered on his favorite hunting grounds, the family farm in Minnesota, the graves of his parents and Wrigley Field at the shortstop position.
