Life Sketch
Virginia Elizabeth Anderson, 94, was born May 6, 1920 to Joseph and Lucile Anderson in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. She was the second of four children. Theirs was a close-knit family. The oldest, a boy named Clyde, was her favorite and only brother. She loved him dearly. Maxine, the next younger sister, was her closest and best playmate as they grew up together. And she loved to care for and play with her youngest sister, Beverly Jean, when she came along when Virginia was a teenager.
Virginia was a generous, loving, trusting, kind, person with a strong sense of loyalty, discipline, and always mindful of the needs and wants of others. She had a strong conviction of right and justice. Her constant smile and friendliness was a joy to all who met her. We as a family were personally blessed to have her in our lives.
Virginia had one daughter, Sharon that she brought up to have similar values and attitudes of life. She worked hard to meet Sharon’s needs and wants, especially during Sharon’s teenage years when she was providing for her as a single mom. During Sharon’s high school years, Sharon attended Oak Park Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist high school in Nevada, Iowa. Virginia was present nearly every weekend to visit and support her daughter. I was aware of this because I, Fred Anderson, also attended Oak Park Academy and had the good fortune to be taken out to dinner by Virginia, along with Sharon and several of her friends. Sharon was very proud of her mother and how caring she was to her. Her words were, “She is the best mother a daughter could have.”
Virginia worked as an elevator operator at the Fort Des Moines Hotel during the mid-50’s and early 60’s. She was pleased to have the opportunity to meet many famous people that stayed at the hotel in those days. That is also where she met her husband, Gene Miller. They were married on November 16, 1968. They have been together the last 45 years, until her passing. I know that Gene will miss her tremendously.
Virginia passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on July 19, 2014 at 10:05 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Lucy Anderson; her brother Clyde, and her sister, Maxine Anderson McDuff. She is survived by her husband, Gene Miller of Apopka, FL; by her sister, Beverly Jean Anderson Porcase of Jacksonville, FL; her daughter, Sharon O’Connor of Apopka, FL; three nieces, Karen Anderson Worrel of Gallatin, MO, Linda McDuff Lafferty of Jacksonville, FL, and Karla McDuff Porcase also of Jacksonville, FL; three nephews, Bob Anderson of Bonners Ferry, ID, Fred Anderson of Calhoun, GA, and Stephen Short of Jacksonville, FL; two grandsons, Kevin O’Connor and Jeff O’Connor; and six great grandchildren, Matthew O’Connor, Jonathan O’Connor, Catharine Gardner-O’Connor, Donovan O’Connor, Taylor Gardner-O’Connor, and Aiden O’Connor.

“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. Now there is a crown waiting for me. It is given to those who are right with God. The Lord, who judges fairly, will give it to me on the day he returns. He will not give it only to me. He will also give it to all those who are longing for him to return.” 2 Timothy 4:7
