John was born and raised in Texas and after he married they moved to Mexico and bought a ranch only to be ran out by the Villistas. They were allowed safe passage back to Texas then moved to New Mexico Territory and staked a claim west of Lovington. While in Mexico a man wanted to buy one of their children. Needless to say they didn't sell her.
John did ranch work, farming, drove trucks, worked at a sawmill, mining, and Pickin' cotton.
John is buried beside his daughters Martha Ellen, Laura Lee, and Imogene Houser, and son Chester Forrest Houser.
Daughters Ellen, Laura Lee, and Imogene died in the New London School blast on March 18, 1937. His son in law, Stanley Powell died a year after the explosion in a tragic fall from an oil derrick. He is also buried at Overton.
