Martha was a victim of the New London school explosion of 1937. Her sisters Laura and Imogene were also victims.

Martha was the tenth child of John Wesley Houser and Ollie Lee Hudgens Houser. She, along with her two younger sisters were living with their older sister, Pauline Houser Powell so they could attend this new school. Martha wanted to stay home from school that fateful day and help with laundry and cleaning but her older sister told her that the reason she was there was to get a good education at a good school so she had to go to school.

Martha, Laura Lee and Imogene were waiting outside the main building at the end of the school day to go home when the explosion happened. They were hit with falling debris and bricks.
