William John Lucas, 77, of Brookings, died Thursday, July 24, 1997 at Brookview Manor in Brookings.
Services were held on Monday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Reformed Church in Brookings. Burial was at 3:30 p.m. in Hospers Cemetery.
William was born Nov. 27, 1919 in rural Alton, the son of Arie and Minnie (Beltman) Lucas. He attended country school and farmed near Sheldon.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He married F. Marie Van Dyke on Jan. 14, 1948 in Hospers. The couple farmed near Slayton, Minn. for seven years. They then farmed near Hospers before moving to rural White, S.D. They retired in 1981 and moved to Brookings.
Mr. Lucas sang with the Chord Masters barbershop group in Sheldon for over 20 years. He was a member of Faith Reformed Church and Gideons International.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert and David; four grandchildren, Angela, Jeffrey, Chad and Christi; two brothers, Howard and Adrian; three sisters, Henrietta, Emma, and Lois; and a sister-in-law, Waltera.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son, Kenneth Ray; and a brother, Emmerson.
