Ernest Junior Bowen
February 7, 1927  -  August 25, 2014
Ernest Junior Bowen, 87, of Manchester, died Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Warm Springs Nusing Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Friday, August 29, 2014 at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Colin Dacus and Rev. Jeff Moncrief officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 pm CST at Randolph Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, AL with Mr. Bowen's grandsons serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Bowen, Roger Bowen, J.R. Fincher, Chuck Yarbrough and Darrell Davis. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Bowen was born February 7, 1927 in Woodland, Alabama the son of Elijah Jackson Bowen and Lue Butler Bowen. Mr. Bowen grew up in Randolph County, Alabama in the Little Mount Carmel community. He attended school at Napoleon and Woodland High School. In 1944, he moved to Roanoke, Alabama where he worked for a short time at Handley textile mill and later was employed at a small grocery store where he would begin his long career in the grocery business.

In 1951, Mr. Bowen came to Manchester as the manager of Rogers grocery store, which later became Colonial Store and at his retirement in 1989, had become Big Star. He was in the grocery business for 43 years.

He and his late wife, Idadelle Kitchens Bowen, were married for 66 years until her death in June, 2012. They were blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grand children.

Mr. Bowen was a long time member of St. James Methodist Church, where he was a charter member, Vice-President, and President of the Methodist Men's Club. His passion for life was surpassed only by his by his love for, and devotion to, his family. His children will forever cherish memories of Wednesday afternoons of just "rambling around" and sharing precious hours together. Sunday trips to Roanoke, Ala. to visit "Ma Bowen" or to visit the "old home place" near Woodland, Ala. gave him great joy. He loved his Alabama home and was proud of his meager, humble, Christian heritage. He had been heard to report that " if you live a good life, then when you die, you'll go to Alabama".

Junior, as he was fondly called by his family and friends, believed deeply in fairness, honesty, dedication, and a strong work ethic, which he passed on to his children, grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and hundreds of people who worked for him. His legacy will live on as each of these will share these life lessons with their children and grandchildren. Memories of his delightful sense of humor and his love for God and family will linger to bless and comfort his loved ones.

He will be seen and remembered in every golden, rosy sunset, in every gentle breeze, and in every wisp of smoke from a tobacco pipe. He has surely already proclaimed," I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith." And in return, he has heard God's pronouncement of " Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Survivors include his daughter, Ida Ann Dunn; his sons, Ernie Bowen and Joel Bowen; one sister, Hazel Bowen of Roanoke; six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Bowen may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 16 Johnson Ave., Manchester, GA 31816.
