Joseph served as a Private. Troop A, 3rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on March 13, 1943 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Joseph was originally declared "Missing In Action" during the war and in 1962 his remains were found and his status was changed to "Killed In Action".

He was killed while crossing the Moselle River near Thionville, France.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.
