At the end of the Civil War, at 17 years of age, Joshua was drafted into Confederate service, according to family letters. There are no records of his service though, which might be due to the late date he entered.
After the war he continued to live with his widowed mother and younger siblings on the family farm. In the census of 1870 he is listed as still living there, and reading medicine.
He was married to Ora L. Thompson by 1880 but the couple apparently had no living children, at least there is no evidence in the census files that they did. By 1880 Joshua worked as a physician in Stantonsburg.
