Doris “Gaga” Rhoden Amaker

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Doris Rhoden Amaker, 83, of Columbia, will be held at 4 o'clock at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 22, 2011, with Dr. Ellen Fowler Skidmore officiating. A private interment will be held prior to the service, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials can be made to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Born September 12, 1927, in Bradenton, FL, she was the daughter of the late George Rhoden and Isabell M. Shaw. Doris, a.k.a 'Gaga,' was a longtime member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. She was actively involved in Girl Scouts, Explorer Scouts, the Vagabonds, Meals on Wheels and Circle. Doris enjoyed cooking and gardening with great passion and loved to play cards in the Bridge Club. Doris provided a loving environment in which her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can flourish in life. She was a warm and welcoming soul.

Survivors include her son, William R. Amaker of Lexington; daughter, Deborah A. Cates of Columbia; grandchildren, Ronald N. Cates Jr. and wife, Stephanie Nicole Cates, of Charleston, Amy Marie Cates of Washington, DC, William Ray Amaker Jr. of Lexington, Lauren Ashley Amaker of Irmo; great-granddaughter, Emerald Diane Cates; as well as the beloved family dog, Maggie.
