James Henry Sparks, 81, of Athens, passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

A native of Bullock County, Ga., a former resident of Savannah, Ga., and a resident of Athens for the past 38 years, he was a son of the late John Henry and Idolene Turner Sparks, and was also preceded in death by five sisters and one brother, Alethea Bowen, Katherine Stuckey, Emma Hale, Lillian Meade, Bonnie Moore, and John Wesley "J.W." Sparks.

He was a member, an usher and served on the Pastor Council for many years of Woodward Avenue Church of God, and had served as a missionary to Guatemala and Honduras on several mission trips.

He retired after 32 years working for Southern Bell and Southeastern Bell, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Juanita Tyson Sparks of Athens; four daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Gay Cooper and husband, Gerald, of Hodges, S.C., Cheryl Ann Wilson and husband, Robert, who are missionaries to Romania, Cynthia Lynn Weir and husband, William "Bill," of Athens, and Kiwana Faye Morrow and husband, Scott, of Soddy Daisy; one son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan James Sparks and wife, Candice, of Etowah; one sister, Cleo Olsen of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Ralph Sparks of Pembroke, Ga., and Manfred Sparks and wife, Marjorie, of Savannah, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Chris Towns, Amanda Wilcox, William "Billy" Busby, Branden Wilson, Hannah Rogers, Jacob Cagle, Alex Cagle, Alison Busby, Joshua Morrow, and James Donovan "J.D." Sparks; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were 7 p.m. Sunday at Woodward Avenue Church of God with the Rev. Clifford Waters and the Rev. Wayne Fritts officiating.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Monday at McMinn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers were Christopher Towns, Branden Wilson, William Busby, Jacob Cagle, Alex Cagle, Joshua Morrow, Peter Wilcox, and Jonathan Rogers.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday before the service at the church.
