Son of William Boyd and Margaret Lyons from Ireland.
Ancestor of the Clows of Chicago as well as Justice Theodore Perry Boyd (1813-1866) of the Supreme Court of Colorado.
Some family trees call him John Lyons Boyd, probably a genealogy program addition (unknown source for middle name).
Birthdate is approximate. Some family trees say 1767 and others say 1770.

He was the son of William Boyd "of Shirrigrim," near Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, a relative of the Boyds of the "townland of Knocknavaddy, in the Parish of Desertcreat, Electorial District of Rock," County Tyrone.

Records of "Carland Presbyterian Church Parish of Donaghmore" (which is a couple of miles from Rock, Dungannon), Drumglass Parish, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland:
"John Boyd and Jane Holland married 21 May 1789 in the bounds of this congregation." (Abstract from Celtic Origins in Ireland.)

Another abstract says May 31 instead of May 21:

At Carland Presbyterian, Drumglass Parish, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland:
All from PRONI MIC / 1P / 28 / 1 :
1789, May 31 John BOYD and Jane HOLLAND, both of Carland

Carland Presbyterian Parish is where the marriage of John's uncle James Boyd to Nancy/Agnes Weir (Wier) was recorded 4 August 1783.

His wife Jane Holland's name is given as Jennie Holland in some old 19th century family letters and a few family researchers have variously transcribed her maiden name incorrectly as Melland, Meland, Milland. (Wier-Boyd Family letters.)

Some researchers show her name as Elizabeth Jane Holland, her birth date 1772 and death as 28 Dec 1828 at Frankfort Springs, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Or they may be confusing him with another John Boyd said to have married Elizabeth Ingraham. (Or the maiden name Ingraham may be someone's incorrect guess.)

Some say he was the John Boyd age "80" shown in the 1850 Census at Moon, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, living with his son Ingraham Boyd next door to one Robert Norris (born 1780 Ireland) who had a Sarah Hamilton living in his household.

Descendants include
The Hon. Theodore Perry Boyd (1813-1866), Justice of the Supreme Court of Colorado,
Matilda Ross Clow (Mrs. James Beach Clow, founder of the Clow Corporation & the first flush toilet),
Harry Beach Clow, president of Rand McNally,
Martha Clow Douglas (Mrs. Donald Douglas, vice president and director of the Quaker Oats Company),
